Singing Bowl Meditation - The great guide for beginners

Singing Bowl Meditation - The great guide for beginners

According to Tibetan oral tradition, the first meditative experiences with singing bowls date back to the time of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. The tradition, along with the teachings of the Buddha, were brought to Tibet from India by the great tantric master Padmasambhava in the 8th century AD.

Singing bowls produce sounds that can induce a deep state of relaxation that naturally facilitates entry into the intermediate level of meditation, the goal of which is enlightenment of the mind. Singing bowls are an essential aid to meditation and can be found on private Buddhist altars, as well as in temples, monasteries and meditation halls around the world. Singing bowls have been used in meditation and yoga for centuries.

Singing bowl application

Singing bowls are beautiful and sonorous instruments that can be used for meditation, relaxation and healing purposes. There are also different ways to use the Tibetan singing bowl. The ways you can get them to sound your own acoustic vibrations are up to you read here.

singing bowl effect

It is possible to increase the activity of the alpha and beta waves in the brain and pleasantly relax the activity of the symphonic nervous system through the vibrations of the "struck" singing bowl. Basically, the sounds from the first hitting or rubbing lead to a state of absolute calm and relaxation. A tool to escape the stressful work or daily life.

Everyone knows how the right music on the radio can affect one's mood or well-being. Music, tones and sounds are powerful tools to change moods. The unique sound quality of singing bowls magically attracts us. The tones are new or strange to us... like from another hemisphere.

There are therapists who point out the benefits of meditation along with singing bowls. A meditative state requires great self-discipline and is difficult to achieve for beginners. The singing bowl helps to immerse yourself in your own self, a descent to the bottom of relaxation. Participants in a guided singing bowl meditation are often asked to let go of the mind and thoughts during the sound bath practice. It is not uncommon for a trance to be achieved which, viewed from the outside, is very similar to sleeping. However, the mind remains permanently sharpened.

Tips & tricks for beginners

Playing a singing bowl can trigger a rush of different emotions, from a feeling of invigoration to the deepest relaxation. But how to achieve such blissful and calm moods? Luckily, there are different ways to play a singing bowl.

Since this is a beginner's guide, we'll focus on the two most popular ways to play a singing bowl: striking and rubbing. Other popular techniques, such as the "wah wah" method or filling the singing bowl with water, can be more difficult for some people at first when experimenting with singing bowls for the first time. That's why we recommend starting with the beating and rubbing on the outside. In order to be able to use both methods, you will of course need a singing bowl, but you will also need a beater or mallet and a suitable resting place for your singing bowl.

The punching method is pretty self-explanatory. Holding the singing bowl in the palm of your left hand, take a wooden or felt-padded mallet and hit the singing bowl lightly on the outside. A wooden mallet produces a high, metallic tone. A felt-padded mallet, on the other hand, produces a rich, softer, warmer tone. When hitting, it is important not to hit the singing bowl too hard. Hitting it too hard can cause the bowl to crack or tilt. To prevent this, some people prefer to place a pillow, ring, or mat under the singing bowl to hold it in place. You can also hold the singing bowl with your non-dominant hand. When holding your singing bowl, be sure to place it on your flat palm. If you wear rings, remove them or avoid contact between them and the bottom or sides of the singing bowl, as this contact can create unwanted vibrations.
